SUGAR REDUCTION PLEDGE CONSISTENT WITH A PROACTIVE INDUSTRY

The Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) has today welcomed the pledge by the Australian Beverages Council to reduce sugar across the industry by 20 per cent by 2025.

AFGC CEO Ms Tanya Barden said that this pledge, which applies to all categories of non-alcoholic drinks, is a significant achievement in uniting the beverage industry to encourage healthier lifestyles.

“Today’s announcement is consistent with the extensive work already underway across the food and beverage sector to drive healthier choices,” said Ms Barden.

“This commitment adds to the significant work Australia’s food and beverage sector is undertaking to drive improved health outcomes by empowering consumers through enhanced food labelling, reformulation, reducing portion sizes of products and encouraging increased physical activity.”

“The work being done collaboratively under the Federal Government’s Healthy Food Partnership program and the rapid uptake of the Health Star Rating food labelling scheme are examples of practical action to encourage healthier choices,” concluded Ms Barden.
