No rest from the threat of avian influenza – potential for supply impacts

7 October 2024

While the quick response to recent outbreaks of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in poultry farms in VIC, NSW and ACT have been effective, there is another strain (H5N1) spreading globally that is causing significant concern. This new strain has impacted agricultural production, the environment (mass die off of wild marine birds and mammals) and is a threat to human health (although considered low risk).

Australia remains the only continent free of this strain, however, there is no way to prevent new strains of avian influenza viruses entering the country through wild birds. A government taskforce has been established to coordinate national preparedness for ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ the strain arrives here. The Australian Government recently announced an additional $95 million in funding to help prepare and respond to this threat.

Even with the best biosecurity practices in place, outbreaks of this strain of HPAI could occur in commercial farms, leading to flocks being destroyed and the movement of animals and products restricted. While not a food safety concern, this is likely to result in supply shortages – particularly egg and egg products and poultry meat, but potentially other animal products. The AFGC is linked into relevant government networks and will distribute alerts and updates to members as the situation evolves.
