Call for public consultation – FSANZ Caffeine Review
27 March 2025
FSANZ has opened the second public consultation round for Proposal P1056 Caffeine Review. The purpose of P1056 is to review the permissions for caffeine in sports and general foods, and to consider the risk it poses to vulnerable sub-populations. Submissions close on 15 April.
This second consultation seeks feedback on the draft variation to the Code. Key points include:
- Explicit permission for a Formulated Supplementary Sports Food (FSSF) to contain a maximum of 200 mg of caffeine in a one-day quantity, in conjunction with labelling requirements with the following concentration limits:
- FSSF in powdered form must not contain caffeine at a concentration of 5% or more.
- FSSF in liquid form must not contain caffeine at a concentration of 1% or more.
- Packaging requirements for small volume FSSF. FSSF in small volume solid and semi-solid forms (e.g., chewables and dissolvable strips) containing caffeine must be individually wrapped if the total caffeine content exceeds 200 mg per package.
- Required advisory statement using wording to the effect of “contains caffeine” on the label of all caffeine-containing FSSF. Required warning statement for caffeine-containing FSSF: “Not suitable for children under 15 years of age or pregnant or breastfeeding women: Should only be used under medical or dietetic supervision.”
- The existing novel food provisions of the Code will continue to apply to caffeine-containing plants or plant extracts that are also novel foods.
