To enhance nutrition and provide a variety of options for every healthy eating, food and drink manufacturers in Australia have made some big changes.
These manufacturers are committed to offering tasty, nutritious choices for all consumers. By developing products with reduced sugar and salt, or increased wholegrain, fibre and protein content, they are helping consumers make healthier choices.
In August 2023, Kellogg’s Australia & New Zealand launched a new take on its classic Nutri-Grain® cereal: Nutri-Grain® Vanilla Malt with 25% Less Sugar. This innovation wasn’t a quick fix. It was the result of over three years of rigorous research, consumer testing, and product development to meet growing consumer demand for lower-sugar breakfast options without compromising on flavour.
Nutri-Grain® is known for its distinctive malty flavour and crunchy texture, so reducing the sugar content without losing that signature taste was no small feat.
What made this innovation stand out is that the R&D team deliberately avoided artificial or intense sweeteners. Instead, they leaned into ingredient technology to enhance sweetness and deliver added nutritional benefits.
The result was a delicious cereal that carries a 4.5 Health Star Rating. It has less sugar and sodium, plus a boost in fibre compared to original Nutri-Grain® cereal. This gives Australian families a better-for-you option without sacrificing the taste and crunch they love.
This new Nutri-Grain® variant reflects Kellogg’s broader commitment to nourishing Australians through innovation. As the company celebrates 100 years of manufacturing in Australia, it has outlined goals around reformulation, improving Health Star Ratings across its portfolio, and delivering positive nutrition.
Kellogg’s is also a member of the Healthy Food Partnership, working collaboratively with the Australian government, health organisations and industry to make healthier food choices easier and more accessible.
Nutri-Grain® cereal is made in only one place in the world: Botany, Sydney.
Aussies have been enjoying Nutri-Grain® since 1973. It was one of the first protein cereals, before “protein” became a trend.
