Representatives from 25 member food and beverage companies came together across two AFGC roundtable events in Sydney and Melbourne this month to align on pressing preventive health issues and shared opportunities. A strong common theme emerged – the need to shift the narrative from “Big Food” critics to being trusted partners in public health, food security, and economic contribution. Attendees agreed that tailored engagement with government, regulators, consumers, media, and internal teams is vital to building trust and influencing policy.
To address perception challenges such as the “profit over people” narrative and public distrust of processing, members agreed to the need for a bolder, more confident communication approach. This includes using clear evidence, real-life stories, and shared data on economic, nutritional, and social impacts. The group emphasised collaboration across the sector, consistent messaging, and localised examples of community contributions. Targeted strategies were discussed – from factory tours for MPs to myth-busting for consumers – while also elevating health and nutrition priorities within organisations.
Together, members aim to present a united, solution-focused voice that champions transparency, innovation, and the essential role of food manufacturing in Australia’s future.
These roundtables are an invaluable opportunity for members to help shape AFGC’s strategic priorities and build industry alignment.
