Great Western Highway Closure at Victoria Pass – Update

26 June 2026

The Victoria Pass remains closed on the Great Western Highway between Mount Victoria and Little Hartley, with all traffic continuing to be diverted via the Darling Causeway and Chifley Road.

Transport for NSW has advised the closure will extend beyond June, with timing to be updated once a contractor is appointed for repair works.

Work is continuing along the Chifley Road detour route to improve safety and travel conditions for road users.

Detour route – current conditions

• Heavy congestion across the detour network, including peak period delays, manual traffic control at key intersections, and incidents such as minor crashes and breakdowns

• Night works on the Darling Causeway from 21 June, including heavy patching, asphalt resurfacing, line marking and slope repairs

• Temporary traffic impacts during works, including reduced speed limits, lane closures and additional travel time

Heavy vehicle access

Updated heavy vehicle access conditions apply on the detour route, including:

• New evidence requirements for PBS vehicle access

• Cancellation of permits for Class 1 vehicles (including OSOM and SPVs), with access limited to movements within the detour area

• Ongoing coordination of freight movements through NHVR and Transport processes

The AFGC will continue to monitor updates and share material changes with members.
