Federal packaging reform update

AFGC continues to closely monitor the federal packaging reform process, with our advocacy continuing across departments and with ministers at state, territory and federal levels. We are hearing indications that a broad extended producer responsibility (EPR) scheme for packaging is unlikely to progress in the current term of government, although the policy direction is still evolving.

The next Environment Ministers’ Meeting is expected in mid-September and should provide further clarity on the path forward for packaging reform, including national consistency, container deposit scheme harmonisation, the role of the Federal Environmental Protection Authority and other circular economy priorities. We also await further information on the proposed intergovernmental agreement (IGA) and how this may shape future national arrangements.

AFGC will continue to advocate for a whole-of-system, whole-of-nation approach that considers the full lifecycle of packaging, supports consistent standards and avoids unintended consequences for industry and consumers. We will keep members updated as further detail becomes available.
