The AFGC is representing members in two government consultations in September. Both are seeking practical, on-the-ground evidence — the kind only members can provide. Public data already tells the general story; what shifts decisions is a specific example. If either is relevant to your business, I’d welcome a conversation.

NSW Disaster Mitigation Plan Workshop on 1 September 2026

Around 97% of disaster funding has historically been spent on response and recovery. Less than 3% goes to reducing the risk before disasters occur.

The next State Disaster Mitigation Plan covering 2027 to 2031 is being developed and the AFGC will attend an industry workshop on 1 September.

Freight and Logistics Skills Gap Analysis Consultation

Only 4% of the rail workforce is under 25. In trucking, it’s 6%. The freight workforce is ageing out, and nothing is coming up behind it — across road, rail and maritime alike.

EY has been engaged by the Department of Infrastructure and Transport to conduct a skills gap analysis of the freight and logistics workforce, delivering Action 2.4 of the National Supply Chain Action Plan. Six consultation sessions are being held across road, rail, intermodal, maritime and aviation, along with one on First Nations and regional workforce participation.

The AFGC has been invited to participate and will represent members’ interests. The analysis will inform government on where the skills gaps sit, what’s causing them, and what action is needed from industry, government and training partners.
