Healthy food and reformulation

The Australian Government’s Healthy Food Partnership is an initiative that encourages the food industry to voluntarily:

  • reduce sugar, sodium and saturated fat in processed and manufactured food and drinks
  • promote more appropriate serving sizes.

The aim is to help Australians to:

  • eat healthy foods
  • reduce diet-related diseases
  • reduce instances of being overweight and obese.

This work builds on the Health Star Rating system, which also helps to improve the nutritional profiles of packaged food and drinks.

Reformulation targets

The AFGC supports voluntary reformulation efforts as part of the Healthy Food Partnership.

The reformulation program encourages food companies to gradually reduce sugar, sodium and saturated fat in some processed and manufactured foods and drinks.

Serving size guide

The AFGC supports voluntary efforts to reduce serving sizes as part of the Healthy Food Partnership.

This voluntary guide focuses on foods typically high in saturated fat, sodium and sugar. More appropriate serving sizes will help Australians to make healthier and more balanced food choices.

Commercial foods for infant and young children

The AFGC supports the Foods for Early Childhood Reference Group. The group is working with the food industry to develop a best practice guide to improve commercial foods for infants and young children.

The guide will support companies to align foods to the evidence and guidelines on early childhood feeding. Guidance areas may include:

  • flavour profile
  • labelling
  • packaging
  • serving size.
