The Australian Food and Grocery Council congratulates the Albanese Labor Government on winning the Federal election. With the campaign now behind us, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and work together to secure another key victory: resilient domestic food and grocery manufacturing.
With the election campaign dominated by cost-of-living concerns, food and grocery manufacturers look forward to continuing the collaboration with the Federal Government to tackle the pressures faced by households and businesses alike.
The election took place against a backdrop of rising costs and global uncertainty. Now more than ever, strong Australian manufacturing and secure supply chains are critical to keeping shelves stocked.
We’re calling on the government to back practical policies that strengthen our capacity to make essential goods right here, at home.
The cost of ingredients, packaging and transport and other inputs have risen sharply in recent years across the food and grocery supply chain. Gas prices alone spiked nearly 40% between 2020-24. That’s putting real pressure on the local businesses making the trusted, everyday products Australians rely on. These pressures are not just numbers on a balance sheet – they directly impact the affordability and availability of essential products in every Australian household.
As Australia’s largest manufacturing sector, contributing $163 billion to the economy and supporting more than 280,000 jobs – many in rural and regional areas – the food and grocery industry stands ready to partner with the Albanese Government to secure the future of Australia’s food system.
A resilient food and grocery industry is a national imperative. We look forward to advancing gains made in the previous three years and delivering real outcomes that support Australian families, strengthen local industry, and build long-term food security.
