A step closer to seeing cell cultured food on the menu

16 April 2025

The FSANZ Board has recently approved its first application to permit the sale of cell cultured quail as a novel food.

Providing a framework for future applications, FSANZ has established two new standards in the Food Standards Code. This follows a thorough scientific assessment and two rounds of public consultation. Under the new regulations, products will be required to be labelled “cell-cultured” or “cell-cultivated” to inform consumers.

Food ministers have 60 days to consider the FSANZ decision. If no review is requested, Australia and New Zealand will join a small number of countries that have approved cell cultured foods.

You can read the approval report here, and contact Devika Thakkar if you’d like more information.
