Food for thought: NNPAS results and what they mean for our industry

17 September 2025

The release of the latest National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey serves as a timely reminder of the crucial role our industry plays in supporting the health and well-being of Australians.

The numbers showed some clear shifts since the survey was last undertaken a decade ago (2011-12); discretionary foods accounted for a smaller share of daily energy intake, sweetened beverage consumption continues to fall, and consumption of ‘free sugars’ as a proportion of total energy are now below WHO recommendations.

These results echo many of the priorities we have been advocating over the years. We’ve consistently highlighted that good health is built on the combination of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and informed choices. The survey reinforces the value of reformulation efforts, innovation and provision of clear, consistent labelling that promote healthier lifestyles and give shoppers the knowledge they need to make informed decisions.

These advocacy efforts reflect AFGC’s broader work through voluntary initiatives like the Healthy Food Partnership, which promotes reformulation of products to reduce sugar, sodium, and saturated fats, creating healthier choices for Australians.

Outside the nutrition world, the next wave of leaders in FMCG will be converging, don’t miss your spot. Join us at the Future Leaders Forum on 16 October at The Winx Stand, Australian Turf Club, Sydney. This high-energy, full-day program will bring together the next generation of industry leaders to explore how evidence guides policy, product development, and industry engagement.
