FSANZ releases latest statistics on food recalls

29 May 2026

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) coordinated 92 recalls in 2025. Fluctuating year-to-year, FSANZ reported an average of 87 recalls per year over 2016–2025, pointing to an overall upward trend across the past decade.

Over the last five-year period, undeclared allergens and microbial contamination were among the most common reasons for recalls.

FSANZ notes that recalled foods represent only a small proportion of products in the Australian food supply. Most recalls are precautionary actions by food businesses to remove potentially unsafe products, with only a small number linked to reported illness.

This data is valuable resource to help identify trends and common issues in recalls, supporting more effective risk management and recall readiness across operations and supply chains.
