Protected: Great Western Highway closure at Victoria Pass: update

22 April 2026

The Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass remains closed to all traffic in both directions, following confirmation of structural deterioration at Mitchells Causeway.

Transport for NSW has committed $50 million to strengthen detour routes, including works to improve resilience and accommodate increased traffic volumes during the closure.

Geotechnical investigations are now complete, and Transport for NSW is progressing expert review and fast-tracked procurement to move toward a safe reopening solution.

Detour and alternate route arrangements are in place, with Transport for NSW advising of significant impacts to travel times, particularly during peak periods.

Access to Lithgow, the Hartley Valley and Mount Victoria remains available for freight and commercial movements via designated routes.

Timeline

  • 8 March 2026: Highway closed at Mitchells Causeway due to serious cracking and structural defects.
  • March to early April: Intensive geotechnical investigations undertaken.
  • 10 April: NSW Government confirms investigations are complete and data is sufficient to inform a reopening solution.
  • 23 April: Technical briefing with engineering experts to develop and test repair options.
