NHMRC reviews sodium and vitamin B6 NRVs

30 September 2026

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is progressing reviews of the Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) for sodium and vitamin B6, reflecting new scientific evidence and international developments since the NRVs were last assessed.

The vitamin B6 review has considered emerging evidence on safe upper intake levels, particularly in relation to adverse effects associated with excessive supplement intakes, while the sodium review examines recommendations across life stages and chronic disease risk. Importantly, NHMRC NRVs are population level guidance values rather than regulatory requirements. Any subsequent changes to vitamin permissions, limits or labelling requirements of products would be considered separately by the relevant regulatory authorities, including the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).
