Resource Corner: Supply Chain Survey

16 December 2024

This year, the AFGC partnered with Argon & Co to conduct the biennial Supply Chain Survey, uncovering insights into how supply chains across the FMCG industry are performing and identifying opportunities for improvement.

The survey provides a fact base to support AFGC’s advocacy, and discussions with trading partners.

A standout theme from this year’s Survey results is the increasing focus on digital transformation and AI integration. Supply chain leaders in the FMCG sector have made it clear: digitisation is no longer optional. By embracing digital technologies, companies gain better visibility, make smarter decisions, and optimise processes across their supply chains. Real-time tracking and predictive analytics, for example, help anticipate demand changes, reduce waste and optimise inventory.

While many companies are already on this journey, upgrading legacy systems and creating integration across supply chain ecosystems remain critical. Cohesive strategies and investments in digital infrastructure will drive greater agility and resilience.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping supply chains by enabling data-driven insights and automating key functions. The survey revealed that 74% of respondents have already invested in or plan to adopt Generative AI in the next three years. From demand forecasting and route optimisation to automated quality control, AI empowers companies to respond to disruptions, reduce lead times, and predict inefficiencies.

However, implementing AI requires robust data maturity, significant investment, and the skills to interpret and apply AI-driven insights effectively. Developing these capabilities will be crucial to unlocking AI’s full potential in the supply chain.

The industry faces a critical challenge: a shortage of skilled professionals to drive digital and AI advancements. The rapid evolution of supply chain technology has created a demand for experts in data analytics, AI, and logistics. To stay competitive, FMCG companies must focus on attracting, developing, and retaining talent while upskilling their existing teams to navigate the digital future effectively.

The Supply Chain Survey results highlight the need for a unified approach to digital transformation, AI adoption, and workforce development. These steps will be vital to building smarter, more resilient supply chains that can meet the challenges of tomorrow.

The Survey Report is nearly complete and will be available to all members through the AFGC member portal. This important resource will guide our supply chain priorities for 2025.
