SmartFacts: Welcome to the future of shopping

21 May 2025

Across Australia and New Zealand, something exciting is happening! AFGC has teamed up with GS1 Australia, the barcode standards leaders, to launch SmartFacts®. An initiative that is set to revolutionise the shopping experience forever.

With a quick scan of a QR Code powered by GS1, consumers can access a whole new world of information about the products they buy and consume. From nutritional details and allergen information to company backgrounds and environmental footprint, all right at their fingertips. As AFGC CEO Colm Maguire says, “SmartFacts® is a 21st-century answer to 21st-century consumer expectations.”

For brands, digital labelling is a game-changer. By presenting product information in a standardised format, brands can build long-term loyalty and trust by highlighting their commitment to transparency and quality.

SmartFacts® also brings significant regulatory advantages. Demonstrating the benefits of digital labelling paves the way for a more efficient regulatory system. A streamlined compliance process is a win-win for both businesses and consumers.

GS1 Australia CEO Maria Palazzolo emphasised the transformative potential of SmartFacts®. “In a time where transparency is key, SmartFacts® is set to redefine how Australians interact with food and grocery products,” she says.

Starting in the second half of 2025, SmartFacts® will begin rolling out across select FMCG products with a full launch in early 2026. For the food and grocery sector, SmartFacts® is a golden opportunity to lead in innovation and consumer satisfaction.
