Help inform improvements to the scheduling of imported cargo inspections

9 July 2025

Background

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) is undertaking a public consultation on a new policy to improve the way it schedules biosecurity and imported food inspections.

While the scheduling arrangements detailed in the consultation are not new, the draft  Scheduling arrangements for imported cargo inspections policy introduces:

  • three inspection appointment categories (standard, group, and recurring appointments)
  • recurring appointment arrangements, to replace manned depots and other permanent booking arrangements.

Issue for members

Members are encouraged to read the consultation paper and respond to the Department’s Have Your Say survey before 8 August 2025

The Department is seeking feedback from the industry on:

  • your current scheduling arrangements
  • your experience with booking inspections in the Biosecurity Portal
  • the options detailed in the new policy.

DAFF will also be holding consultations sessions in Melbourne (14 July), Sydney (15 July) and Brisbane (21 and 23 July). You must register to attend these sessions.

If you wish to request further information, you can contact the DAFF at cargooperationssurvey@aff.gov.au

AFGC action

The AFGC will keep a watching brief on the development of this new policy and will update members where necessary.
