Australia’s Circular Economy Framework Launched

19 December 2024

Following the Environment Ministers Meeting (EMM), Australia’s Circular Economy Framework has been launched to drive the nation’s transition toward sustainability. The framework commits to doubling Australia’s circularity by 2035, aiming to minimise waste, regenerate natural systems, and optimise resource efficiency. It sets targets, including:

  • reducing the material footprint by 10%
  • increasing material productivity by 30%
  • safely recovering 80% of resources.

Priority sectors include industry, the built environment, food and agriculture, and resources, with a particular emphasis on reducing food waste, valorising agricultural by-products, and adopting circular packaging solutions like recyclable or compostable materials.

Food and grocery manufacturers are called to lead these efforts by innovating products, improving logistics, and collaborating on shared infrastructure.

The framework presents the opportunity for industries to enhance competitiveness, access new markets, and build a resilient, circular economy that aligns economic progress with environmental stewardship.
