NSW EPA Plastics Plan 2.0
11 November 2025
Overview
The NSW EPA has announced its Plastics Plan 2.0, expanding the state’s strategy to reduce plastic waste and pollution. It builds on the 2021 Plastics Action Plan, tightening regulations to reduce single-use plastics, boost recycling, and promote reuse.
Objectives
- Target unnecessary, problematic or hard-to-recycle plastics
- Cut plastic litter by 30% by 2025
- Phase out key items and additives by 2030
- Lift recycling rates and recycled content use
Key dates
- 2027: Phase-out of items like plastic tags used to seal bags containing bread, bakery, and dry pantry items
- 2028–2030: Phase out rinse-off cleaning products containing plastic microbeads, and moulded or cut packaging made from expanded or foamed plastic
- 2030: Ban on non-compostable fruit stickers, small condiment containers and mandatory tethered lids
- New standards to manage additives and microplastics
Member action
The AFGC encourages members to familiarise their teams with the key dates for phasing out of items and requirements of the Plastic Plan 2.0, and review with their packaging and supply chain teams to identify packaging which may be captured in the Plan.
