PFAS – Industry Information Session

24 March 2025

New controls on per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), will take effect from 1 July 2025. These controls stem from the Commonwealth’s December 2023 decision to schedule specific PFAS chemicals under Schedule 7 of the Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management Standard (IChEMS).

Key Changes

From 1 July 2025, the manufacture, import, export, and intentional use of certain PFAS chemicals (including in mixtures and finished goods) will be prohibited. These regulations target PFAS sub-sets that are deliberately added to products, often for their water- and grease-resistant properties.

Regulatory Oversight

Chemical regulation in Australia involves Commonwealth, state, and territory governments. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) administers IChEMS, ensuring nationally consistent chemical management standards to protect the environment.

Industry Information Session

To support industry understanding and compliance, AFGC encourages members to attend a free online information session:

Date: Friday, 4 April 2024
Time: 10:00 AM AEDT
Guest Speaker: Sonia Goldie, Director – Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management Section, DCCEEW
Register here

Ms. Goldie will provide an overview of the PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS standards and compliance assessment methods and address common industry questions. While highly technical or case-specific queries will be taken on notice, the session will focus on key regulatory requirements and industry-wide concerns.

Who Should Attend?

This session is open to all impacted industry representatives, regardless of membership or sector. It is a valuable opportunity to clarify obligations and prepare for compliance ahead of the 1 July 2025 deadline.
