Workforce pressures: Evidence to support the next phase of action

Background

AFGC has released a new workforce report commissioned with Oxford Economics Australia, examining workforce pressures across five key occupations in FMCG manufacturing.

The report provides an independent, evidence‑based view of workforce demand and supply trends affecting our sector, and where pressures are most likely to intensify if current conditions continue.

What the report covers

The report focuses on three core areas:

  • Workforce demand and supply across five key occupations critical to food and grocery manufacturing operations:
    • Manufacturing production managers
    • Purchasing and supply logistics clerks
    • Food and drink factory workers  
    • Forklift drivers
    • Packers
  • The main drivers of labour supply, including education and training pathways, migration, workforce mobility and an ageing workforce
  • Modelling of future workforce gaps over the next decade, based on projected demand and supply trends

The report is designed to support informed discussions with government and stakeholders, and identify the policy areas upon which attention needs to be focused to alleviate the sector’s workforce pressures.
